I've also heard this rule before but I do not agree. I believe documentation in coding/ paper is very very important even the program is developed by yourself. No one can ensure he/she can remember every detail after days. But someone think the best documentation is the code itself, agree?
In the prevoius company, I had to maintain a trading plus accounting system without one piece of paper about its specification. I could not understand that messy program... and finally called the customer and asked him to teach me step by step how the program worked. So embarrassed!
